KOZHIKODE: The state government has decided to set
up an IT park at the 12-acres belonging to the defunct
Kunnathara Textiles, near Atholi, which was shut down
in 1994.
The government will acquire the land and properties
of Kunnathara Textiles and hand it over to Kerala
Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation
(Kinfra) to set up the IT park.
Kozhikode MP, M K Raghavan said the state industries
minister has issued orders for setting up the park
under Kinfra after acquiring the land and property.
He said the proposed park would house IT, IT enabled
services (ITES) and electronics industries.
According to the MP, the decision was taken on the
basis of the report of the six-member committee
constituted by the government last year to come up
with options to revive Kunnathara Textiles. The
government has also received consent of the high court
for the taking over the company land.
The 12-acre site has buildings covering an area of 1.1
lakh sq feet and is easily accessible by road with the
site situated just 10km from NH 17 and 300 metres
from the state highway. All this makes it an ideal
setting for an IT park.
Raghavan said that all 600 employees of the company
including 400 permanent workers will get
compensation ranging from Rs1 to 2 lakh.
Though company authorities had tried to sell it twice
in 2006 and 2012, protests by employees and political
parties thwarted the move.
